AI Policy Drafting Worksheet
About this resource
This is the working-session companion to the AI Use Policy Starter Kit. The Kit is the full ten-section template with suggested language; this worksheet is the single landscape page a leadership team fills in together to settle the decisions the Kit then records.
It compresses the policy into the choices only leadership can make: scope, the three permission tiers, the data line, where human review is required, disclosure, the reporting route, and ownership with a review date. Completed in one session, it gives whoever drafts the policy everything they need. Left incomplete, the blank fields show exactly which decisions the organization has been avoiding.
The Kit is the document. This is the meeting. Filling it in is the part organizations postpone, and the part a template cannot do for them.
How to use it
Complete this before anyone opens the Starter Kit. Most policy projects stall because a drafter is handed a template and left to guess at leadership decisions, which produces a document that gets revised endlessly. Settle the choices here with the right people present, and the drafting becomes transcription rather than invention.

Common questions
The decisions take one working session with the right people present. The drafting takes a day once those decisions exist. Policy projects that run for months are almost always stalled on decisions rather than on writing.
Scope, the boundary between permitted and prohibited use, the data line, where human accountability is required, disclosure expectations, and who owns the policy. Everything else in a policy is drafting; these are the parts no template or external adviser can settle for you.
Use a template for structure and suggested language, but settle your own decisions first. A template completed without those decisions produces a document that governs an imaginary organization, which is worse than no policy because it creates the impression the question has been handled.
